Fungi have been successfully used to remediate pollution in soil and water. Mycelium is the vegetative portion of fungi, similar in form and function to the roots of a tree. The enzymes that fungi exude upon their substrate are capable of digesting toxic hydrocarbons and converting them into carbohydrates. The exponential growth rate of mycelium allows for rapid inoculation, colonization, and treatment of contaminated sites. The North Coast has an ideal physical climate for mycoremediation and many of the species used in mycoremediation are already present in our forests and soils. Fungaia Farm offers many very aggressive fungal strains for use in mycoremediation. Our state-of-the-art laboratory and incubation facility can produce large amounts of mycelium to facilitate soil remediation projects. Mycofilters are constructed of readily available materials (such as straw and woodchips) that are held in place through a permeable membrane (such as burlap) and inoculated with mycelium. Road building, septic systems, farming, logging, and ranching practices can negatively impact the environment, especially streams and rivers. Erosion and pollution that result from these land-use practices degrade sensitive riparian habitats, impacting the myriad of plant and animal species that inhabit them. Mushroom mycelium can be used as a biological filter to reduce siltation and pollution of watersheds while increasing biological diversity and ecological succession. Mycofilters can be installed in drainages and riparian areas to filter pathogens and pollutants. High levels of fecal coliform bacteria and petroleum products that enter rivers and streams during storm events can be significantly reduced through mycofiltration. In addition to pollutants, the high levels of silt that accompany storm events are detrimental to ecosystem health; salmonids and many other species suffer from effects from high levels of siltation. Mycofilters can filter silt and mitigate many of these impacts, improving habitat and water quality. Mycofiltration is also useful in the treatment of urban stormwater, which can be heavily contaminated with a variety of pollutants. The binding abilities of the mycelium to the substrate allow forest and agricultural waste to be utilized in the construction of a living filter, capable of reducing pollution and erosion. Pathogens such as fecal coliform bacteria and petroleum products including diesel, oil, and gasoline can also be removed from contaminated soil and water. Mycofilters can be installed in proximity to a known source of pollution such as a farm or ranch as well as non-point source situations such as along roadsides and in riparian areas. We are interested to continue to research and support the implementation of mycofilters. Plant your garden mushroom kit in the garden anytime between March and October or after the last frost date. Your 5 lb. bag of spawn can inoculate up to 20 sq. ft. For quicker fruiting of mushrooms apply more spawn per sq. ft. Clear the site of vegetation, and mulch to reduce competition from other fungi. Choose a spot that will be a no-till area. In between garden rows, around perennial plants, and around small fruit trees are good choices. Lay down one layer of cardboard. Then layer at least 2 inches of fresh hardwood woodchips, sawdust, and/or straw (i.e. substrate). Break the spawn apart and spread it evenly in a single layer. Cover with up to 4 inches of substrate. For faster colonization, add a second layer of the substrate. Water regularly as you would vegetables in a garden bed. Pay special attention to moisture in the first few weeks as the mycelium establishes itself. Expect mushrooms to fruit after the first heavy rains in the fall and spring. Harvest before the cap has expanded. Always cook your mushrooms. Feeding the bed with additional substrate after the first year will prolong the life of the mushroom patch. When the mycelium is established, it can be used to inoculate new beds as previously described. Follow our instruction sheet for plug spawn inoculation. Once logs are inoculated, inoculated the logs can be incorporated into your garden or landscaping. Logs can be buried vertically or horizontally in the soil, sand, or other substrates. Horizontally buried logs can be laid out end-to-end or buried side by side in a “log raft”. The buried portion of the log still needs to be inoculated and will provide food and water for the mushrooms. Maintenance and care of the logs can be greatly reduced by burying the inoculated logs in a moist location of your garden that will be watered throughout the summer. Possible locations include a cultivated berry patch, a perennial herb bed, the border of a garden, near fruit trees, or a shaded forest area that stays wet or can be watered in the dry season. Inoculating stumps is also an option for these species. Site location is key when inoculating stumps or creating artificial stumps. The log or stump must be in a moist location with some shade/mulch to prevent the wood from drying out. Nameko – Pholiota nameko, will do best inoculated onto cherry or alder logs. Bury horizontally with a quarter to one-third of the log exposed after the incubation period. Fruitings can occur 2-3 times a year in the spring and fall when moisture is high (from sprinklers or rains). Nameko is a delicious delicate mushroom with a nutty flavor. Reishi – Ganoderma lucidum, prefers maple and oak logs and warmer temperatures. If daytime temperatures are below 70°F, the logs should be placed in a greenhouse, hoop house, or cold frame for incubation and fruiting. With all Ganoderma species, short inoculated logs can be placed vertically in plant pots and buried with sand and/or gravel. Another method is to bury the entire log horizontally and cover it with sawdust, sand, and/or gravel. (See instructions for Garden Giant kits here). Open the box and remove the mushroom kit, large plastic bag, instructions, and mister. Fold box flaps inside the box. Place the box into the large plastic bag and place the mushroom kit back into the box. The large plastic bag is intended to act as a “humidity tent” to help maintain humidity around the kit. Keep the box and the outer large plastic bag open for the life of the kit. Cut one small ½ inch X with a clean knife through the white filter patch on top of the mushroom kit to allow for the fruiting of mushroom clusters. Do not unwrap or remove the inner plastic bag from the mushroom kit. Place your Oyster Kit either indoors or outside under bright, indirect sunlight or bright artificial light. Maintain the appropriate temperatures and humidity for your kit: White Oyster: 55-75° F Blue Oyster: 45-65° F 95-100% Humidity Lightly mist through the opening in the top of the humidity tent with (bottle mister provided) water to maintain a high moisture level when mushrooms are present. Small mushrooms will begin to form in approximately 1-2 weeks. Harvest clusters of mushrooms before the caps unfurl. Clusters will mature in approximately 4-8 days. If stems are elongated and caps are small, increase light exposure and air flow. To remove clusters, grab and twist. Always cook your mushrooms before eating. If mushrooms are wispy and not very dense, increase light exposure and airflow. If mushrooms are yellowing and dry increase humidity. To remove mushrooms, grab and twist. Always cook your mushrooms before eating. Plug spawn is used to inoculate a fresh-cut log to encourage the growth and fruiting of a specific species of edible and/or medicinal mushroom. Plug-spawn can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4-6 months before use. Log Preparation Harvest logs (4-8 inch diameter, 3-4 foot long) preferably in fall, winter, or spring before trees’ buds break. Avoid additional damage to the bark while cutting. Inoculate fresh-cut logs within 1-2 weeks after harvesting. Raise logs on pallets or other wood before inoculation to prevent rot, especially if using alder When the logs are ready, drill inoculation holes with a 5/16 ” drill bit to a depth of 1-¼”. You can purchase a depth setter for your drill bit to make this process easier and more consistent. Drill approximately fifty holes per log. Holes should be drilled 2-3 inches apart. Stagger rows 3-4 inches apart so that the holes form a diamond pattern. Use a closer spacing for the lion’s mane. Remove plugs from the refrigerator 24 hours before use. Hammer the plug spawn into each hole with a hammer or rubber mallet. Melt soy/beeswax blend in a crock-pot or double boiler. Use a small paintbrush to apply the wax. Seal over plugs with a layer of wax to prevent plugs from drying out during the incubation period. Seal the ends of the logs with wax and any areas where the bark has been damaged. The ends of the logs can also be dipped in melted wax if the container is large enough.
